The last few months mobile initiatives seems to boost in Belgium. In April there was the first Mobile WebCamp in Hasselt and the next one will be in February. In September Belgium had its first Mobile Monday in Brussels, followed by the second one this week, a third one is planned around February. The iPhone is on sale in Europe and Android is on its way. Is it time for a mobile revolution?

The short version? Not yet. As much as I would like to see it happen something tells me it's still too early. Wanna know why?

Devices

First of all you need a capable device. Although most mobile phones on the market have a browser built in, it doesn't seem to be enough. In my opinion the browser is not the most important internet application on a phone: it's too clumsy to use and most webpages aren't optimalized for a mobile experience. So what do we need? Widgets, applications, gadgets or any other name will do. These are all small applications optimized for a limited task: the weather forecast, the nearest Chinese restaurant, a city map, my train schedule, etc.

While that's true for the low-end phones we have iPhones, G1's and BlackBerries these days. Sure, that's the way to go but does everyone want to pay €525 (current price for an iPhone in Belgium) for a phone? A lot of us do and the popularity of these phones my be one the most important triggers for mobile internet but I think prices are still too high for the masses. This problem will solve itself over time.

Data roaming

Europe is not the US and Belgium is tiny. If you drive one hour chances are good you are in a different country, on a different mobile network, with different fees. Roaming fees vary form operator to operator but are way too expensive. When do I need my data connection the most? Exactly, when I'm abroad. I know the restaurants in my own city, which events are scheduled and how to get from A to B. I need this information when I'm on a city trip, looking for a place to eat or something to do on a rainy day. Today I don't use mobile internet even though it would do the task the best because it's too expensive. We need a European operator or a data plan with fixed rates in Europe, no matter which country you are in. I'm willing to pay a little extra but not too much, I still live here, not abroad.

Applications and stores

Java ME (the ‘mobile Java’) has been around for a while and allows developers to create these small internet widgets. This is great but it's hard to find a popular application that is not the Gmail mobile app. Why is that? Quite simple, it's too difficult to use. A phone is not a small desktop computer, you don't Google for an app, go to the website and download it. The App Store and Android Market are a great answers for this problem and look... it sells. Let's hope Windows Mobile will include this in one of the next releases.

Platforms

As Fabian Tilmant explained on Mobile Monday we need more mobile platforms. If we want to get more users on mobile internet we'll need something to offer them. Some platforms are ready: Twitter, Facebook, De Standaard, etc. can attract a great deal of people but that's not enough. Others platforms are not ready yet: the NMBS (the Belgian Railways), De Lijn (public tram and bus service in Flanders), banks, etc. As I wrote before I'm waiting for the Belgian Railways (and others) to come up with a mobile platform. Mobile internet will get some added value when I can check if my next train is delayed or if I still have enough money on my bank account while queuing in the supermarket. This is possible today using their websites but this includes using websites designed for desktops, not for mobile phones (look for your next bus using your iPhone if you need an example).

Yesterday we went to Mobile Monday Brussels. Mobile Mondays are community events for:

[...] mobile industry visionaries, developers and influential individuals. The Mobile Monday spirit is one of open innovation and is seen as a catalyst for mobile innovations.

All around a central theme: “When marketing meets mobile”. The organizers in Belgium would like to keep it small and informal for now to let it grow organically. In September this year around 20 participants showed up, this time 46 people subscribed. It's growing already.

Presentations

Fabian Tilmant from Cleverwoods spoke about “Mobile Advertising: what can we expect in Belgium”. He explained why mobile internet needs more ‘mobile platforms’ to see its breakthrough. Platforms are needed as a basic layer for advertising and he explained that a mobile model can't succeed without advertising.

Although I do agree that advertising is an important factor, I don't think you always need advertisements. The mobile De Standaard site (a Belgian newspaper) doesn't inlcude adds and still everyone keeps mentioning them (or is this free advertising I'm promoting here?).

Especially with the limited screen real estate and a low user attention level we'll need a different kind of advertising, banners just won't do it. I think you'll need to give the user something back for the time he invests in your ad: sponsored content maybe or a sponsored mobile game? The free version of Twitterific includes non-obstructive ads, is this the way to go?

Jean-Paul de Ville was supposed to demo Pumbby, a service that pays you to receive ads on your mobile phone. I was looking forward to this one but Jean-Paul was ill. Now I still don't know why this happy sounding name needs two B's. Oh well...

Networking

After the presentations everyone introduced himself briefly. This wouldn't have been possible in a larger event but here it worked out perfectly. In my opinion it lowered the barrier for the networking later on and showed what companies are interested in mobile platforms today. It seems most participants have a media/advertisement background but it was nice to see De Lijn (public bus and tram service in Flanders) was there as well as I like to complain about the lack of mobile support on their site.

The NMBS (Belgian national railway operator) and De Lijn are really important companies to promote mobile internet in Belgium. If they could provide their mobile platform (with an API if possible) with the bus and train schedules it could be a huge boost for mobile internet if you ask me. I'm pretty sure the developer community could take over from than on and create mobile widgets or mashups that find the next bus home (delays included) when your train arrives.

I had a great discussion with the guys from Microsoft as well, about the need for a company to embrace mobile platforms or not. Even though our views differ I liked to exchange thoughts.

Still interested? Have a look at the Mobile Monday Amsterdam post I wrote earlier this month.

Bunker was asked to photograph Mobile Mondays in Amsterdam. He was kind enough to put me on the guest list and even offered a taxi to Amsterdam and back. Would be stupid not to go, wouldn't it?

Raimo van der Klein, founder of Mobile Monday Amsterdam, opened with a presentation about the ‘smart context’ or how context could change depending on your state: happy, sad, at the airport, in the office, etc. E.g. the software could learn what is normal for you (commute) and share abnormal (leaving for holidays) events with friends.

Johan Koolwaaij, scientific researcher at Telematica Institute, showed IYOUIT. A mobile app that gathers data around you and about you. Sounded like a huge ‘log everything about your life’ but not exactly production ready yet.

Raymond Perrenet, EVP Strategy & Development at T-Mobile, about the raise of data plans on mobile phones with the introduction of the iPhone (and with Android around the corner). Are mobile data plans finally taking off?

Teemu Arina

Teemu Arina took another approach. He went for 3 pecha kucha presentations in a row: “Changeable in appearance, mood, or purpose”, “Undergoing a shift in status” and “Moving or changing quickly from one state or condition to another”. All three visually stunning presentations in his own eccentric style. Loved it! This guy knows how to entertain his public. I'll copy Dorien here and link to Teemu's own post about his presentation.

Bruce Sterling

Closing speaker was Bruce Sterling, an American science fiction author, I had never heard of. His talk sounded very religious standing on the pulpit and speaking about the “Internet of Things”. He explained that people close to the volcano will experience the greatest impact: your grandmother's life probably won't be affected with the introduction of the iPhone when she still uses a landline but yours will. In 10 years time you can still use a hammer but your iPhone will be useless. A nice point - made me think - after seeing the BlackBerry Storm vs. the G1 fight on stage earlier. In Sterling's words:

“I want you to think real hard about the values you are going to save and stop worrying about the plastic.”

Conclusion

Overall it was an interesting day on a beautiful location, almost feeling surreal driving back to Belgium in the thick fog. The best part, however, were the discussions with Dorien, Koen and Bunker!

I first learned about 2D barcodes at Mobile WebCamp in Filip Borloo's presentation “The dead of the URL?” where he showed alternatives for traditional URLs. One of his most striking examples was the use of 2D barcodes near Japanese bus stops where people use their phones to take a picture of a 2D barcode which brings them to a mobile webpage where they can find the bus schedule for their location. Another one is the 2D barcode on an egg in the supermarket so that you can track the origin, again, a simple URL to a webpage with the egg's ‘history’.

I've been waiting for an iPhone application that would decode these codes and take some action based on their contents. Barcode was first but a simple search in the AppStore revealed 5 other applications as well... time for a round up.

Name

Developer

Supported codes

Supported actions

2D Sense

2D Sense, Inc

QR code, DataMatrix and ShotCode

Open URL, call phone numbers

Barcode

Stefan Hafeneger

QR code and DataMatrix

Save results, open URL, send mail, call phone number and show content

iDecode

Haploid

QR code and DataMatrix

Open URL

NeoReader

NeoMedia Technologies, Inc.

QR code, DataMatrix and Aztec

ScanLife

Scanbuy Inc

EZcode

All applications have troubles with decoding barcodes that are not perfectly scanned. I don't know if this has anything to do with the quality of the iPhone camera or the decoding algorithms but it's frustrating to scan a code multiple times without success. The following reviews are sorted according to my preferences, the best ones first:

	September 3th, 2008
	Simon Schoeters
	0.3
	product

Barcode

iTunes link

The oldest application out there but still one of my favorites. The ‘Choose you code type’ screen shows an example code which makes the interface much more intuitive as most of the other apps: I don't need to know if I'm scanning a QR or DataMatrix code but I do recognize the patterns. Barcode lets you take a picture or select one from the iPhoto library which means I can scan one from a saved image from a website, nice! Small remark here: it would be better if you could scale the codes smaller as the image size as it's impossible to scan some larger codes. Once scanned it shows the message as shown in the screenshot. You can now select an action (save the result, open an URL, send mail or call a phone number) from the toolbar at the bottom. One of the best barcode scanners for the iPhone in my opinion.

	September 3th, 2008
	Simon Schoeters
	0.3
	product

2D Sense

iTunes link

This one is loaded with features and recognizes the most different code types which is a huge advantage: I don't want to keep different code scanners in case I would need one or the other. It does ask to use you location which I don't really understand, why does a barcode scanner needs my location? It seems that there is an online service connected with this app but I didn't look into that.

	September 3th, 2008
	Simon Schoeters
	0.3
	product

iDecode

iTunes link

A nice little barcode scanner with no overhead. It only scans QR codes and DataMatrices and the decoding process is slow. There is also no ‘history’ feature with previously scanned codes so I would go for Barcode or 2D Sense.

	September 3th, 2008
	Simon Schoeters
	0.3
	product

NeoReader

iTunes link

The only app that supports the Aztec code so it may be your only choice if you need this but, that said, it's a confusing application. It has an option where you can enter a code which brings you to the Wikipedia article for the ‘code’ you enter... no idea what it's doing there?! There is also no feedback when you take a picture and no barcode is found, it should. You can enter your country, gender and age in the settings screen but why?! Not my favorite barcode scanner as you might have guessed.

	September 3th, 2008
	Simon Schoeters
	0.3
	product

ScanLife

iTunes link

ScanLife only supports it's own licensed EZcode which you can create on the ScanLife website (after registration). The app keeps a history of scanned codes and you can pick your favorites. It may be useful if you need to scan EZcodes as this is the only app that supports these but I need more flexibility. The application takes you to a survey form after scanning your first code which feels too much like invading my privacy (why do they need my yearly income for?). I removed it right away.

As a nice added bonus all these apps are free so time to try out and decide what suits you best!

We had ‘some’ trouble unlocking our French iPhone before we could use it on a foreign network due to a software bug in the iPhone 1.1.2 firmware as you could read in one of the previous posts. The end result was a very expensive iPhone which we still needed to jailbreak, kinda stupid and a waste of money. Yesterday Steve introduced the 1.1.3 firmware as expected so Jelle took the dive and tried it out. Well, I'm happy to report it works perfectly!

I synced my iPhone and choose to upgrade. I didn't switch my SIM card back the the Orange one so I upgraded with my Base (a Belgian operator) SIM card. iTunes downloaded the 1.1.3 firmware and upgraded my phone. I got an error saying my SIM was locked, locked as in PIN locked, not network locked so that's fine. I entered my PIN code and docked my phone again. There it is my legally unlocked - non jailbraked - iPhone!

This weekend I was discussing what Cardinal Mercier did during his life that he has a street in Leuven named after him. As with most of these discussions these questions tend to bother me for the rest of the day. At home I would do a quick Google search but not everyone has a computer in their living room let alone on the train to Brussels as in this case. Wouldn't it be nice to have Google in your pocket?

Enter iPodia, an iPhone interface for Wikipedia with an optimized layout and a find function to look for text in a longer article. The auto-completion search field makes it easy to look for a keyword. iPodia is available in 10 different languages.

The Dutch language option in the drop-down box forwards to the Portuguese version of iPodia at the moment but I suppose this will soon be fixed (for now you can change the code in the URL if you have to).

Updates

The Dutch language bug is fixed now as Keishi points out in the comments. Thanks!

Powerset released an iPhone optimized Wikipedia search engine today (June 2008). I love the design and usability! Make sure to try out the outline views or in-article search features, it feels very Mac OS X like. It doesn't have the multiple language support like iPodia but I changed my bookmark to Powerset right away.

The iPhone... probably the most hyped gadget of 2007. In Belgium we have a law called ‘koppelverkoop’ that prohibits the sale of mobile phones tied to a contract. In itself this is a good practice but it also means we won't see the iPhone here any time soon. When Orange announced they would sell an unlocked iPhone in France it was too difficult not to drive over there. As there may be other Belgian, Dutch, Swiss, Spanish... European people interested in how things worked out it seemed best to write down a few importing things to know before you head over there. So how to get an unlocked iPhone legally (with 1.1.2 and a European power plug)?

Activate

First you'll need an Orange store “close” to you as you'll have to return to the same store once again after you bought the phone.

Take your ID with you and some credit card as it may be difficult to get one with cash, they'll make a copy of your ID as well.

In the store ask for an iPhone (or ‘terminal’ as the French call it) with a ‘Mobicarte’, Orange's pre-payed card. You'll need a French address to register with Orange, well, we don't have one. Luckily the people in Lille were kind enough to use the store address to register our account. Pay €650 (yes, it's way too expensive, I know) and you should get your iPhone with a French SIM card.

Don't forget to buy an extra Mobicarte from €100 (you'll get €50 extra for free) as this is how you have to pay the unlock fee. That's it, you can go home now.

Activate the iPhone with iTunes. I had to create a new iTunes account with a French address to get through the activation steps. Once done you have a working iPhone! Only one problem though, every phone call to your friends will be an extremely expensive international call.

Official unlock

Call 722 (in France) or +33607626464 (international), press 9 (speak with someone) and ask the operator for an iPhone unlock. You'll need your French phone number (as verification?). Orange will now send a letter to your address with the ‘unlock code’. They won't send the letter to an address outside of France and your registered address is the store where you bought the phone so that's where your letter will be.

The letter was disappointing. Turns there is no ‘unlock code’ but only a few steps you need to take to unlock your phone. Here is a translation of the letter from Orange:

Enter you Orange SIM card in the iPhone.

Connect your phone with your internet connected computer.

The iTunes screen will open (if not, go to http://www.apple.com/fr/itunes/).

Click on the ‘Restore’ button: the message ‘Do you want to keep your iPhone parameters?’ shows up, click the ‘Save’ button.

The message ‘Congratulations, your iPhone has now been unlocked’ shows up.

Click on the ‘Finish’ button.

Well, I tried this numerous times without success. iTunes restores your phone, no unlock message whatsoever. I called the French Orange and Apple helpdesk but they all told completely different things. This is where the official unlocking process stops, in the end we didn't need this letter at all.

Unofficial unlock

The following is something a friend of mine found out and so far it seems to work. We tried this procedure 3 times with 3 different French iPhones with exactly the same results.

The trick is to restore your iPhone with you own SIM card, not the new Orange one. Insert you own SIM card in the phone (we all used the Belgian Base SIM) and restore the iPhone as described earlier. iTunes will crash with an ‘unknown error’ message and once recovered you should see the the ‘Congratulations, your iPhone has now been unlocked’ message showing up.

You now have an unlock French iPhone! One small problem though, you still can't call anyone (if you live in a country where they don't sell the iPhone yet).

Jailbreak

You now have an unlocked iPhone but a software bug in 1.1.2 causes the iPhone to crash when it needs to look for a matching phone number in your contact list. It has something to do with the iPhone not knowing which phone formats to use in countries where they don't sell iPhones yet.

The easiest solution is to jailbreak the phone and install the iWorld package which fixes this. We started with the idea to buy an iPhone and unlock it the normal way but after lots of phone calls and support tickets the only way to make it work is to jailbreak the thing. Hopefully Apple will fix this bug in the following firmware update so that we can skip the jailbreak part next time.

I'm not really sure if you need a French iTunes account after all, we tried with a French one but maybe this wasn't really needed. So, no, the French iPhones are not country locked but yes, a software bug in 1.1.2 makes the iPhone crash in a country where they don't sell iPhones.

I use Remember The Milk, an online to do list and task management application, to keep track of the things I need to do as I tend to forget, well... almost everything. Thanks the RTM's API the list of integrations with other systems is impressive: an iGoogle gadget, Gmail integration and Windows Mobile syncing, just to name a few.

There is an iPhone interface as well, which looks great by the way. Only one small problem though, you need a pro account if you want to use it after the 30 days trail period. Well, as of yesterday there is a solution for that: my flatmate Jelle Vandebeeck wrote a great - free - iPhone interface for Remember The Milk.

iFousa

Let's give the stage to Jelle for a moment, shall we?

Used with permission from the Fousa.

Find it hard to remember your daily tasks? Wonder if it's possible to keep track of them where ever you are? Well now you can! With this application you're able to check your tasks everywhere your go. Well at least every where you have an EDGE connection...

You can add and delete tasks on the fly. Hey, you can even complete or postpone them... Every action is handled by a framework that connects to the ‘Remember The Milk’ server. So nothing is stored by the app, but goes directly to the framework.

I have been bèta testing his application over the last few days and it's great! The official RTM iPhone interface has more features but iFousa is a great alternative for anyone who needs quick access to his tasks on the road, did I already mention it's completely free? So, give it a try and give Jelle some feedback, I'm sure he would appreciate it. The webapp is written in Ruby On Rails but I suppose that's no surprise if you know Jelle a little.

At work I use the RTM iGoogle gadget in my Firefox sidebar or the full website but iFousa is the preferred interface when I'm not behind a computer screen. Thanks to RTM and iFousa I can manage (and remember) my to do list wherever I want.

Resources

Try the iFousa for Remember The Milk on your iPhone.

Check the official Remember The Milk website.

Last week a friend ordered a Poken for me as a present. This triggered a discussion over business cards and why we still use plain old paper cards in this digital age.

The problem is an old one: how do you keep in touch with people you recently met? You need some way to exchange personal information in an easy, unobtrusive way. Business cards are a great answer to that problem: it's fast to exchange, cheap enough to hand out, universally accepted and portable. That's great but isn't it a waste of resources to print something digital on a piece of paper and have someone on the other side input the data in a system... again? Not to mention the errors this process generates: how do I interpret a Japanese address, is it his first- or last name, I would like a photo as well, have I met this person before?

Pokens and E

Filip argued that Pokens or E could be the answer. Pokens are small plastic RFID readers. High five your Poken against another one to exchange your details and the next time you log on to your social network sites your profiles will be linked. E uses the same idea but focuses on the software side: you can create multiple profiles and exchange details via an internet-enabled mobile phone. They have an RFID device - called ‘Conntector’ - in the pipeline.

While these services look promising I don't think it will be the answer. Sure, these things are focused on social networking profiles and may be just fine for their target audience but that won't cut it. Why not?

The other person needs the same service. Do you have a Poken? Or maybe you use E? It's too much of a hassle and you will look stupid in non geeky situations... so you'll just hand out your plain old business card.

The device. I suppose a Blackberry could easily exchange a vCard over Bluetooth with all you contact details, yet, no one uses it. Is it too technical? Handing out a business card needs to be as simple as possible. With E you need an ‘internet-enabled’ device, how does that hold when you are abroad?

Backward compatibility. I still need my printed business cards as failsafe measure. Why do I need 2 systems? Right, I'll only take the cards, it's just the safer option.

Personalization. A business card is something unique, it's a way to express yourself (or your company). A plumber's business card looks different than the card from a graphic designer. Does it look professional, clean or playful?

Disposable RFID business cards

My shot for a possible solution: the disposable RFID business card. It still needs a flashy name and ditto logo but here is the idea: combine the old business card with RFID. What if we would embed an RFID chip in a plain old business card?

Service independent. The RFID could link to a universally accepted standard (e.g. a vCard on your website). You could even think of a subscription system that automatically updates your contact's details when they change.

Device independent. If my phone has an RFID reader I could scan the card to add it to my phone's address book immediately, if not, I keep the card and scan it later.

Backward compatible. If you don't have an RFID reader you can use the card as you would today. This would be useful starting from day one. With a Poken you need a “critical mass” first.

Personalization. You can still design the card as you see fit.

Digital format. Even a Japanese address would be entered correctly as I don't need to guess which information is where, we moved this to the software now.

What do we need? I'm not sure but maybe RFID tags are still too expensive to throw away? With prices around $0.50 it's still a little too expensive if you add the price of the business card. RFID chips are designed to be thrown away (look at packaging) so I suppose prices will drop. People also need an RFID reader but that's just a matter of time. More and more companies start providing RFID readers: Violet and tikitag amongst them.

What do you think? Will we replace business cards in the near future and if so, how will it successor look like?

The Gentleman's Guide to the Calling Card explains the origin of the first business cards.

Sharecard is a €1.59 app from Doseido that sends an iPhone contact in vCard format by mail. I browsed around on the App Store for a way to easily share my contact information when I meet someone. My requirements: fast, efficient, easy to use and a polished UI is a plus.

I couldn't find a free app to send vCards and choose Sharecard for it's good looking UI. Yes, I know, the iPhone OS 3.0 should do this out-of-the-box, fingers crossed. With Sharecard you can choose to include your name, organization, e-mail, phone, address and/or chat information in the vCard. I played with the application and sent some feedback to the author. The next release fixed some – not all – of my remarks. Here are a few things I'm still missing:

The mail will be send from a Doseido mail address. To me this feels like sleek advertising from the developer. It would be acceptable for a free app but for a paid app I expect it to use my own e-mail address (idem for the subject field, or the ad link at the bottom). It also makes the mail more obscure for the guy receiving my vCard, not to mention spam filters.

Notes are not included in the card. This is a pity as I use this field to add all the missing data (eg. my Skype or bank account).

The company name is replaced by <samp>(null)</samp> when no company name is given, this should be an empty field.

The contact photo is not included, now, I know from my own experience that this is hard to do so I shouldn't be too picky about this one.

The type of both the phone number and e-mail address is wrong, the vCard source shows <samp>type=TERNET</samp> and <samp>type=bile</samp>.

All my phone numbers are prefixed with the country code (eg. +32 for Belgium) but Sharecard removes the plus sign, making the phone number unusable.

Let's wait for the next iPhone OS update. It'll include contact sharing out-of-the-box, making applications like Sharecard superfluous.

Some of my friends recently bought an iPhone and they often ask which apps they should install. Last year I made a list with “Mac apps for switchers” so here is my “Favorite iPhone” apps list.

Free apps

Shazaam

Has been around for ages and one of the first apps I installed. Shazaam records a few seconds of a song you are listing to in a pub, a party, on the radio,... analyses the recording and tells you the artist, title and album. It even keeps a list of all your recordings and links to the iTunes or YouTube version. For me it's a great reminder of which songs I liked. Shazaam works great if there isn't too much background noise, but I can hardly blame Shazaam for that.

Facebook

Another classic one. First app installed on my phone and still on the home screen. I hardly ever use the Facebook website anymore, checking the latest status updates and photos from my iPhone is what I need and this app does this without all the annoying requests.

Skype

You can make calls (over Wi-Fi, 3G and EDGE are not supported) or chat as you would expect. It's promising and the test we did was impressive (switching between desktop and iPhone), quality was great as well, and still... I almost never use it. There are not background applications on the iPhone so you need to have Skype running to receive calls and that's where it goes wrong. I still hope they will add push notification support so that you get a pop-up for an incoming call and can open Skype only when you need to.

T.Mobilis

Not my favorite application from a design perspective and only useful when you happen to be in Belgium but the data is good. It shows a map of the Belgian highway network with a traffic incidents overlay, showing: roadworks, accidents and traffic jams. I know, this should be included in Google Maps but isn't (yet). Let's hope this app will be redundant in the future.

<del>WiFi Checker</del>

<del>Scans for wireless access points and checks if the open ones have a free internet connection (and not some “pay here” holding page). Useful to find some internet juice when abroad.</del> This one is not OS 3 ready (yet). This was the only app in his kind at the time so I should check again if there aren't any better alternatives available today (WiFiTrack for example).

Paying apps

Tweetie

Tweetie is a €2,39 Twitter client. It's well designed, fast and supports multiple Twitter accounts. I like it's simplicity and speed but there are free alternatives if you want: Twitterrific (iTunes link) or TweetDeck. Birdhouse looks nice as well, but haven't tried it yet.

Flight Control

Something different: a game! You have to draw lines from the planes to their landing strips and make sure they don't crash into one another. It's as simple as that. You can choose between multiple airports and there is even a multi-player mode but it's the simplicity that makes it great. No learning curve, lovely graphics and addictive as hell. Firemint released their sales results in April 2009: in less than 2 months they earned $700.000! Impressive for a €0,79 app.

Things

Things is a task list app, I use it to keep track of things I have to do. There are hundreds of these apps in the app store but Things Touch is the iPhone version of its bigger brother Tings for Mac which I already use. I like it but €7,99 may be a little too expensive for what it's worth.

Cha-Ching

A €2,39 finance app I use to keep track of my expenses. The design looks good and it's nice to use. Same comment as for Things really, I use Cha-Ching for iPhone as I have been using the desktop version for a while and syncing is what I want. Cha-Ching is still a little buggy and they change their design more as they change the code (so to speak) but I'm using the beta so shouldn't complain. Check Squirrl as well, it's comparable to Cha-Ching.

CocoaHeads Belgium is a new initiative to bring Cocoa enthusiasts together. The first meeting is scheduled on September 28, 2009 at the IBBT offices.

This occasion seemed a good excuse to start a list with all Belgian iPhone applications, commercial or not, useful or utterly useless, French, Dutch or English. The application needs to be available in the App Store and designed or developed by a Belgian. Feel free to add applications in the comments so that I can update this list accordingly.
